We list below some ESG practices currently adopted by the office:

System B Certificate

Following our commitment to ESG and including it in our agenda, /asbz received B Corp certification in January 2023, making us the first major law firm in Brazil to join the global community of leaders who have an eye towards building an economic system that is more inclusive, equitable and regenerative for the people and the planet.

As a result, /asbz now joins a community of world leaders comprising more than 6,000 companies worldwide.

Certification as a B Corp is administered by B Lab Standards Analysts, a non-profit organization founded in 2006 in the United States with the vision that one day all companies will compete to be the best FOR the world and, as a result, society and the planet will enjoy a more shared and lasting prosperity. Standards for B Certification are overseen by B Lab's independent Standards Advisory Board. The Global Governance Board oversees the global growth of the B Lab and the B Movement, and is made up of representatives from each global partner, promoting the expansion and strategy of the B Movement. Currently, there are more than 6,000 B Corp certified companies, spread across more than 70 countries and 150 industries.

6-month maternity and paternity leave

In 2017, /asbz was one of the first firms in the world to offer 6 (six) months of fully paid maternity and paternity leave, including for cases of adoption and same-sex unions.

This initiative seeks to increase the well being of babies and children with their families, and also to minimize the limiting effects of motherhood on women's careers.

Time Sheet is not a criterion for evaluating people

As a general rule, law firms use the time sheet as an instrument for pricing, charging fees and internal controls, but many also end up using the number of hours entered in this tool as a means of evaluating their professionals.

At /asbz, no professional is evaluated based on this criterion, regardless of seniority, but, rather, based on dozens of other individual, collective, tangible and intangible metrics.

This practice aims to solidify the capability and values of our professionals, allows them to be more involved in social causes and innovation, which ultimately avoids a conflict of interest between lawyers and clients.

Code of Conduct and Ethics, Ethics Committee and Whistleblowing Channel

/asbz has a code of conduct and ethics, an ethics committee and a public whistleblower channel to ensure that all ASBZ stakeholders adhere to the principles, guidelines and values related to ESG practices.

Diversity and Inclusion

We value people for who they are, regardless of their age, sex, gender, sexuality, color, appearance, religion or any other characteristics that, for us, are expressions of life. We support and invest in projects that promote inclusion and diversity, as well as initiatives to train people and new leaders belonging to minorities, with the aim of minimizing existing imbalances in society, and in our own firm. We believe that fostering the professional development of new people and emerging leaders is a more inclusive and permanent measure, in contrast to the mere movement of professionals already inserted in society and in the corporate world.

In addition to internal practices for the development of women, persons with disabilities, black people, among other categories, the firm also participates in and contributes to the Next Generation of Lawyers program (https://civics.com.br/next/), whose objective is to contribute to diversity and inclusion in the legal ecosystem, especially with regard to students from less favored social classes, black and/or belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pro bono

In addition to having the social cashback program that generates direct investments in the institutions listed above, /asbz also invests the time of its professionals in campaigns and legal advice.

In 2022, more than 729 hours of our professionals were invested in pro bono work.

Sustainable facilities

/asbz headquarters in São Paulo is established in one of the most sustainable buildings in Latin America according to the international LEED certification (Score: 89 - Platinum category), which takes into account requirements such as carbon credit generation, energy sources, waste treatment, water supply, indoor and outdoor environments, materials, etc.

Conscious use of paper

It is estimated that a member of a corporation consumes on average around 10,000 sheets of paper per year, the production of which presupposes the felling of a standard pine tree 13 meters high.

/asbz adopts a policy of sustainable use of paper, one of the main basic materials of its activity, so that in the firm this number reaches less than 45 (forty-five) sheets per month per member, which results in the firm preserving around 11 trees every year.

Social Cashback

/asbz pioneered the Social Cashback Program, in which the financial punctuality of our customers benefits actions that promote social, diversity and inclusion.

Open numbers

Since its inception, /asbz has shown its cost, expense and income structure to all its lawyers, regardless of seniority and position.

This practice rewards transparency among our community of lawyers, and helps to shape our managers of tomorrow.

Carbon Neutral

In 2023, /asbz achieved carbon neutral status through the purchase of carbon credits certified by the UN, which offset the more than 82 tons of carbon emitted by the office in 2022.

Additionally, /asbz invested in forest restoration by planting 580 tree seedlings in agroforestry systems, promoting regenerative agriculture, with the future goal of capturing CO2 from the atmosphere through the planted trees. These actions strengthen the office's ESG strategy and its commitment to sustainability and social transformation.
